Colorado Avalanche announced on July 10, 2026 that they have signed defenseman Christian Wolanin to a one‑year contract for the 2026‑27 season, adding a proven AHL scorer and former NHL regular to a roster that sits first in the Western Conference with a 55-16 record, on a three‑game winning streak.
Wolanin, 31, logged 53 games with the Providence Bruins this past AHL season, posting 31 points (7 goals, 24 assists). He ranked second among Providence blueliners in scoring and tied for first in assists, while his four power‑play goals tied for the league lead among defensemen. Those numbers suggest a player who can contribute on the man‑advantage and in tight situations.
The left‑shot blueliner has appeared in 86 NHL games, tallying 23 points with Vancouver, Buffalo, Los Angeles and Ottawa. His most productive NHL stretch came with the Senators in 2018‑19, when he posted career highs in games (30), goals (4), assists (8) and points (12). That blend of AHL dominance and NHL seasoning gives Denver a versatile option for both the second defensive pairing and power‑play unit.
Born in Quebec City, Wolanin spent three seasons at the University of North Dakota, helping the Fighting Hawks capture the 2016 Frozen Four title. He earned NCHC Second All‑Star honors as a junior and amassed 22 goals and 50 assists in 109 NCAA contests. Internationally, he represented the United States at the IIHF World Championships in 2019 and 2021, winning bronze in 2021 while leading the U.S. defense in points.
Christian’s father, Craig Wolanin, played 13 NHL seasons, including a stint with the 1996 Stanley Cup‑winning Colorado Avalanche. Craig logged 364 games with the Avalanche/Nordiques, recording 91 points. That lineage adds a personal tie to the organization, echoing a tradition of rugged, stay‑at‑home defensemen.
Wolanin will report to the Avalanche’s training camp in early September, where head coach Jared Bednar expects him to compete for a spot on the third defensive pairing. If he cracks the lineup, his AHL power‑play success could translate into additional scoring chances for Colorado’s already potent offense. Either way, his signing adds depth as the Avalanche chase another deep playoff run.
