The Colorado Avalanche have made significant changes to their roster, trading top-six winger Valeri Nichushkin to the Columbus Blue Jackets for three draft picks.
As of June 30, the Avalanche stand 1st in the Western Conference with a 55-16 record, on a W3 streak, after losing 2-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights on May 27.
The Avalanche traded Nichushkin and also sent depth forwards Ross Colton and Jack Drury to the Nashville Predators for forwards Fedor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux, minor-league goalie Magnus Chrona and two draft picks.
These moves freed up nearly $11 million in salary-cap space for the Avalanche.
The Avalanche used part of this space to re-sign defencemen Brent Burns and Brett Kulak to new contracts, aiming to remain a Stanley Cup contender.
Superstar centre Nathan MacKinnon of Cole Harbour, N.S., remains with the team.
The Avalanche must add more physicality and defensive skill to their roster, which won’t be easy given their limited salary-cap space.
And they will face tough competition, including the Florida Panthers, who acquired Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators.
The Panthers now have a strong forward line, but still need to address their goaltending.
Colorado Avalanche president and general manager Joe Sakic initially expected to keep the roster largely intact, but made significant changes.
Sakic’s shakeup didn’t affect the core roster, including MacKinnon.
The Avalanche will look to build on their current standing and make a deep playoff run.
But they will need to make some savvy moves to address their remaining roster needs.
So the Avalanche will be active in the offseason, looking to make trades and sign free agents.
The team’s fans will be watching closely to see what other moves Sakic makes.
And the Avalanche will be looking to make a strong push for the Stanley Cup.
The Colorado Avalanche have a strong core, but need to add some key pieces to make a deep playoff run.
The team’s roster is taking shape, but there are still some questions to be answered.
